On the 6th August 2011, Gecko Sri Lanka (UK) held their annual cricket tournament to raise funds for Malayalapuram, a district in Vanni Sri Lanka, heavily affected by the civil war. The cricket event was a huge success, raising £630.33.
Like the rest of the population of Vanni, the people from Malayalapuram were displaced in 2007 during the final stages of the war. They ended up in Pulli Vaaikal and were caught up in the final battle and those who survived moved to the IDP (Internally Displaced people) camps in Vavuniya. These IDPs have now been allowed to return to their original land in the Vanni area. There are approximately 648 families and almost every family has lost one or more family members during the war.
The need is extremely high in this community and there are several projects being undertaken to help support and redevelop the village. Children’s education has been severely disrupted by the war and many have missed out on schooling and education during the conflict and displacement. Efforts are being made by an organisation called ‘Kaveri kala manram’ (KKM) to help with the training of teachers and providing ‘catch up’ education for children especially at pre-school level.
It was decided that the money raised by Gecko would contribute to the efforts of KKM on the training of pre-school teachers. The funds supported the running of a two day workshop and for the purchase of suitable educational materials. The training was held by two well qualified Montessori teachers from Colombo who taught newer methods of coaching English and Arithmetic. The workshop was attended by 30 pre-school teachers, in and around the Malayalapuram Village. The feedback from the participants and the trainers was extremely positive and further training has been suggested as it was so successful.
Many thanks to the Gecko committee and all the keen cricketers that attended. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Please do get in touch if you are interested in supporting similar programmes in this village. Every little counts!
